My Journey as an Author
"If you can't beat'em, Cheatham"
My journey began in 2012 when I took my daughter to the bookstore. We combed through all the sections and couldn’t find any books with black or brown faces. Instead of complaining about it, I decided to write a book. Just like that. I just decided to do it even though I knew nothing about the book publishing process. Little did I know that was just the beginning of what would lead me to publish several books, expand my artistry, and be the creator of the Seattle Urban Book Expo.
So I set off to write my first book. At the time, I was also getting into movie scripts. So I wrote my first book, kind of like a movie script. When I connected with an African children’s book writer, he let me know that my script was too choppy and it needed to flow like “honey flowing down the side of a tree.” So I revised.
Next I realized I needed an illustrator. I went to Craigslist and found a guy out of Ohio that charged per page. I raised the money and worked to get the illustrations done.
But wait, then I found out I needed a publisher. Long story short, I needed $2,000 to get published. That was more money I needed to come up with for this snap decision to write a book.
The next lesson was realizing I had misspellings and typos so I needed to pay for a copy editor. I paid for 3 book revisions. Time started to stretch from when I decided to write the book. By this time I was well into 2014, but ready to sell my first book titled The Family Jones and Eggs of Rex.
The reality of marketing and promotion for the book was another lesson learned as I sold books out of the trunk of my car and by word of mouth. Luckily, people gravitated towards me as a Black man trying to do something positive. But at this time there were no events in Seattle for book promotion. As I looked for ways to promote, I connected with Stacy Marie Robinson, the creator of the Toronto Urban Book Expo.
In 2016 I traveled to the Toronto Urban Book Expo and published my second book titled
Why is Jane so Mad? I also decided to start the Seattle Urban Book Expo for black and brown authors in the Seattle area.
I reached out to Black Dot Seattle and told them my idea for the book expo. It was hard to find Black authors to say the least. But despite this, for the first Seattle Urban Book Expo, we got 8 authors to sign up. The event was on October 1st. Over 250 people came through.
I learned about the business side of publishing with my second book. In 2017, I sold out at the Barnes and Noble book release for Why is Jane So Mad? I continued to plan the 2nd annual Seattle Urban Book Expo. It was held at Washington Hall. The event was more successful than the prior year with 25 authors and over 360 attendees.
Expo growth continued—the 2018 Seattle Urban Book Expo had 400 attendees, but I thought it would be my last expo because I had a difficult time pulling it off. Everything that could have went wrong probably did and it drained the life out of me. To this day I am not sure how I did it. I guess I just kept going.
Finally, I got a break. I found a new job in 2018 and started to get my personal life back in order. I came to a point and had to ask myself, “What do you want to do with your life?”
In 2019 I was still soul searching. But I didn’t want to lose my book momentum so I published my third book titled Hi Blue Sky. Shortly after this, I attended my granddad’s funeral and had a deep conversation with my mom. Then my epiphany came.
Early 2019, I had my moment of understanding my purpose and why I am here. I now know that I am the nucleus of my family and my success. Since then I’ve filled my time fully expressing my whole self as an Author of children’s books, an Advocate in the community, and an Artist in acting.
